Antique city of Termessos in Turkey near Antalya
The ruins of the ancient city of Termessos are one of those places in Turkey that have remained almost untouched both for restorers (which means that we see it in its original form), and for crowds of suffering tourists. After all, they are visited by no more than 0.2% of tourists, although they are located just an hour away from the fashionable Belek in the vast Taurus Mountains. Have you heard about such a place? Personally, I-no! And did not even suspect the existence of this unspoiled beauty until recently …
I have always been attracted to such cultural monuments and the ruins of cities from which antiquity and antiquity blew. A couple of years ago I experienced a special pleasure visiting the ancient Aspendos Theater and the ruins of the ancient city of Perge, which are located near this place. I’ll definitely tell you about Aspendos and Perge in the near future.
The best season to visit is the end of spring or the beginning of autumn, when it is not hot and the fewest people. You may even be the only visitors to such beautiful places like me.
But what struck me more in this place than in everyone else? Perhaps this is a combination of several factors at once:
Picturesque views – the city is located among the Taurus Mountains, at an altitude of 1050 meters in protected areas. Being among the ruins of an ancient theater, I felt like in the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, in the mountains of Peru, the same energy and the same landscapes.
Not crowded – there are practically no tourists here even on weekends. I really love such places – where you can slowly walk, sit among the ruins, delve into shards and pebbles. Enjoy the flight of birds, and no one will knock you down with your elbows …
Untouched – the city was not reconstructed at all, not restored. For a long time it was even unknown and rediscovered in the 20th century. Everything in him seemed to freeze after the terrible earthquake that destroyed it.
Historical value – a little more about it …
Termessos is lost high in the mountains among protected areas. It used to be the historical region of Pisidia.
According to historical documents, the city was founded by the ancient people, Solim. A little later he passed into the hands of the Lycians. Even before our era, the territory of Asia Minor and Turkey were ruled by Ancient Persia. And according to legends of the same years, Termessos became a city that did not even submit to Alexander the Great, who began his aggressive campaign against Persia.
The city is located in rugged mountains, it was very difficult to transport supplies and water, and the siege of the city began to exhaust the strength of the troops of the great commander. In addition, the local residents, the Highlanders, showed incredible resistance to the forces of Macedon. And he decided to lift the siege. According to the same legends, he then took the city of Sagalas, where he staged a bloody massacre, learning that among the locals there are relatives of the inhabitants of Termessos.
Such cruelty of the commander puzzled historians and his contemporaries more than once. So it was with the burning of Persepolis, about which, they say, Macedon more than once regretted …
And here were educational institutions, a library and the baths of the ancient city. Even now, all these buildings are striking in their monumentality, purity of style and some particularly skillful “fit” into the nature of the place.
Another legend tells about a little later times and the conflict between the old and young population of the city, which arose because of the shelter of the fugitive dyadoha Alkety – the military commander A. the Great.
But all this is in the sources and those who are interested in this issue will be able to easily find various hypotheses and legends. By the way, to the tomb of Alketa, located even higher in the mountains, we did not climb. I think there will be another reason to come back here in the future!
Why is the city so badly destroyed? Presumably, the strongest earthquake in the 3rd century AD destroyed the main and vital communications and buildings of the city, and for many centuries it froze among the mountains and forests left by its population. Until it was rediscovered in our modern centuries. And all the more valuable is the fact that it was not restored – everything breathes here and lives its own story. Every corner of this city penetrates her …
The climb to the city at first glance seems very tiring (and probably not suitable for kids and elderly people), but I was lucky – it was an early morning, it was very cold (around 0), and on the contrary, such a trip allowed me to warm up well. A clear clear sky, swirling birds, the silence of the mountains … all this clarifies thoughts so well, you begin to see not so much with your eyes as with your heart to penetrate the surrounding landscape.
Termessos is located among the Taurus Mountains near the tourist Antalya. The picturesqueness of these places delights and places one on contemplation and even meditation.
Our small group had a wonderful guide to the world of history and this beautiful place, guide Ibrahim. Excellent knowledge of history and all aspects of ancient times made it possible to communicate with him literally on any topic – from the arrangement of Roman terms, schools and libraries, customs and customs of those times to the history of the emergence and transformation of gladiatorial battles, from simple displays of animals and battles with them to bloody pondinki.
